Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi indicated today that the primary intention of the United States in talks may not be peace, stating in a post on X that “one cannot discuss a ceasefire while maintaining the siege.”
“When a party that has actively engaged in war, siege, sanctions, and threats through violence dismisses Iran’s reply merely because it is not a capitulation, Gharibabadi stated, “it becomes evident that the primary concern is not peace, but the enforcement of political will via threats and coercion.”
On Saturday, the deputy minister stated that Iran’s 14-point counter-proposal intended to achieve “the permanent end” of the war, adding that “the ball is in the United States’ court,” as reported by the state media outlet IRIB.
Yesterday, US President Donald Trump referred to Iran’s proposal as “foolish” and “unacceptable.”
“It’s impossible to discuss a ceasefire while the siege persists; to mention diplomacy while sanctions are heightened; or to address regional stability while offering political and military backing to a regime that causes aggression and instability,” Gharibabadi stated in his remarks.
The final reference probably pertains to Israel, the US’s ally in the conflict with Iran.
