The price of diesel, an essential fuel for the US economy, has reached an all-time high in four Midwestern states: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
As reported by AAA, the average cost of diesel surged to record levels in those states on Wednesday.
The recent rise is due to a mix of elevated oil prices, refinery shutdowns, and refiners focusing more on jet fuel than on diesel and gasoline.
Diesel fuels the US economy, driving tractors, trucks, buses, trains, and boats. Rising diesel costs could be driving up consumer food prices by increasing expenses for farmers cultivating crops and transporting food to supermarkets.
The national average price for a gallon of diesel has surged 60% in the last year to $5.66 per gallon, nearing the record high of $5.82 per gallon reached in June 2022.
Diesel has increased even more swiftly in these states:
Indiana: +72% to $6.13 per gallon
Illinois: +74% to $6.13 per gallon
Michigan: +77% to $6.13 per gallon
Wisconsin: up 82% to $5.87 per gallon
