David Seymour, American Airlines’ operations chief, informed airline employees that the shutdown’s effects were “simply unacceptable,” following the most challenging weekend for air traffic controller staffing shortages, which led to nearly 1,400 cancellations across the carrier’s mainline and regional operations.
“This is utterly unacceptable, and all individuals deserve more,” Seymour stated.
He stated that American’s primary and regional services experienced 57,000 delay minutes due to air traffic control, affecting nearly 250,000 passengers.
He reaffirmed his commitment to safety, emphasizing that the airline will persist in adhering to the guideline issued by the Federal Aviation Administration last week, which gradually reduces capacity at 40 US airports by up to 10% this week. He informed employees that the airline anticipates “ongoing cancellations and delays alongside the reductions mandated by the FAA.”
