Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is calling for the release of four Iranians held by Kuwait, which believes they were attempting to infiltrate the Gulf nation.
“Kuwait has illegally assaulted an Iranian vessel and captured 4 of our nationals in the Persian Gulf in a blatant effort to create division,” Araghchi shared on X Wednesday. “This unlawful action occurred close to an island utilized by the U.S. for assaults on Iran.”
“We insist on the prompt release of our citizens and retain the right to take action,” the minister stated, without commenting on the accusations of infiltration attempts.
On Tuesday, state media in Kuwait announced that officials detained four people identified as members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attempting to enter the nation to “execute hostile actions.”
On May 1, the Iranians attempted to reach Kuwait on a fishing vessel and encountered Kuwaiti soldiers, according to Kuwaiti state media. Iran refuted the claims in a statement released by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, asserting that the four individuals were “conducting regular maritime patrol duties” for the Iranian coast guard and only entered Kuwaiti waters due to a “malfunction in the navigation system.”
If verified, the incident would mark the first documented attempt by Iran to conduct a military infiltration into a nearby Arab nation amid the war.
