President Donald Trump announced today that Saudi Arabia intends to buy F-35 fighter jets from the US, a contentious move that could reshape the military equilibrium in the Middle East.
“They will buy F-35s.” They’re purchasing them from Lockheed. It’s an excellent aircraft. “We produce, by the way, the finest military gear,” Trump stated in the Oval Office during his discussion with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In response to a question about Israel’s reaction to the agreement, Trump stated, “Israel knows, and they’re going to be quite pleased.”
Previously, Trump recognized that Israel wishes for Saudi Arabia to obtain aircraft of “lower caliber.” He expressed his belief that Israel and Saudi Arabia are strong allies and are “both in a position to receive the best.”
Trump mentioned that the US and Saudi Arabia have “almost” finalized an agreement regarding a defense treaty.
Riyadh has been pursuing the F-35s for an extended period, as they are among the most advanced military aircraft globally. However, Israel — the sole nation in the Middle East possessing the jets — is concerned about preserving its military advantage.
Congress might impede export licenses for the F-35s to Saudi Arabia, although this is rare.
